Thematic Focus: Resettlement

The Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement were held 24-26 June 2014 in Geneva.  The objective of these meetings is "to address a wide range of policy and procedural matters, including advocacy, capacity building and operational support" and to formulate joint strategies on resettlement.  The European Resettlement Network has circulated a summary of the discussions on its web site, along with the agenda and other documents.  A comprehensive report on the 2014 ATCR (including the text of the NGO statement) is available from the Refugee Council of Australia, while thoughts on the meeting from the Canadian perspective have been posted on the blog of the Ottawa Office of the Mennonite Central Committee.

For another overview of resettlement, see the Progress Report on Resettlement (along with presentation notes) that was submitted to the most recent Standing Committee meeting.  It reviews UNHCR's resettlement activities and identifies current challenges and how to address them.

New Issue of RSQ

The latest issue issue of Refugee Survey Quarterly (RSQ) is now available.  Contents for vol. 33, no. 3, Sept. 2014 include:

  • UNHCR International Protection Policies 2000–2013: From Cross-Road to Gaps and Responses [abstract]
  • The New Wave: Forced Displacement Caused by Organized Crime in Central America and Mexico [open access]
  • Paradigm Shift or Business as Usual? An Historical Reappraisal of the “Shift” to Securitisation of Refugee Protection [abstract] [Academia]
  • Displacing Equality? Women’s Participation and Humanitarian Aid Effectiveness in Refugee Camps [abstract]
  • Advocating “Dignity” and “Return” for Lebanon’s Palestinians: Imagining a Diasporic Project [abstract] [full-text via MSF]

Kudos to David James Cantor for making his article "open access."  I believe it's the first official OA article to be published in RSQ (although other articles have temporarily been made freely available in the past; see, e.g., vol. 33, no. 1, March 2014, the full-text contents of which are all currently accessible). Hopefully, more authors will follow in Dr. Cantor's footsteps!
