A UNHCR-sponsored two-day meeting of governmental and non-governmental representatives opened yesterday in Geneva. Here is the the High Commissioner's opening statement. Also available is the just-released "Protracted Refugee Situations: High Commissioner's Initiative" (Dec. 2008), which proposes action plans for dealing with long-term Afghan refugees in Pakistan and Iran, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Eritrean refugees in eastern Sudan, Croatian and Bosnian refugees in Serbia, and Burundian refugees in Tanzania.
