Security for Humanitarian Aid Workers

One aim of World Humanitarian Day is to raise awareness about the increasingly insecure environments in which aid workers operate. To better track incidences of violence against aid workers, Humanitarian Outcomes recently launched a web site that provides access to the Aid Worker Security Database.

In addition, here is a listing of several new reports and articles that examine the extent of the violence directed against humanitarian personnel and provide recommendations for enhancing security:

Attacks on Aid Workers: Who Is Paying the Ultimate Price? (Consultancy Africa Intelligence, Aug. 2010) [text]

"Humanitarian Principles and Protection Dilemmas: Addressing the Security Situation of Aid Workers in Darfur," Journal of International Peacekeeping, vol. 14, nos. 1-2 (Feb. 2010) [abstract]

"Mind the gap: Documenting and explaining violence against aid workers," European Journal of International Relations, vol. 16, no. 3 (Sept. 2010) [abstract]

The Protection of Aid Workers: Principled Protection and Humanitarian Security in Darfur, NUPI Working Paper, no. 770 (NUPI, Feb. 2010) [text]
