Tip of the Week! Free Journal Content

Scholarly journal publishers regularly promote their fee-based content by offering various types of freebies. Wiley uses the new year as an opportunity to provide complimentary access to many of the first (usually January or February) issues of new journal volumes.  That's why you can not only peruse but also download the articles in Disasters, vol. 38, no. 1 (Jan. 2014) and International Migration, vol. 52, no. 1 (Feb. 2014).  Watch for International Migration Review's first-of-the-year issue too.

Here are some examples of free articles in other disciplinary journals that may be of interest:
  • "Asylum and the Post-Political: Domopolitics, Depoliticisation and Acts of Citizenship," Antipode: A Radical Journal of Geography, vol. 46, no. 1 (Jan. 2014) [full-text]
  • "Bridging the Gap: Humanitarian Protection and the Convergence of Laws in Europe," European Law Journal, vol. 20, no. 1 (Jan. 2014) [full-text]
  • "A Dispossessed People: the Depopulation of the Chagos Archipelago 1965–1973," Population, Space and Place, vol. 20, no. 1 (Jan. 2014) [full-text]
  • "Refugees: Tripartite Agreement," Africa Research Bulletin: Economic, Financial and Technical Series, vol. 50, no. 11 (Jan. 2014) [full-text] (apparently, no. 11 is always designated as the Jan. issue in a given volume)

Journal publishers often recognize International Days by making a set of research articles free on a temporary basis. So in honor of World AIDS Day, Taylor & Francis is offering free access to AIDS/HIV-related articles until 31 Jan. 2014.  The following titles are particularly relevant:
  • "Non-governmental Organisations and the Management of HIV and AIDS in Refugee Camps: A Comparison of Marratane Camp in Mozambique and Kakuma Camp in Kenya," Journal of Contemporary African Studies, vol. 29, no. 1 (2011) [full-text]
  • "'They don't even greet you': HIV Stigma and Diagnosis Disclosure Experienced by HIV-Positive African Immigrants and Refugees in New Zealand," Journal of HIV/AIDS & Social Services, vol. 12, no. 1 (2013) [full-text]

Oxford Journals commemorated Human Rights Day the same way, presenting visitors with this collection of selected articles (including some from IJRL, JRS & RSQ) made freely available for a limited time.

Cambridge Journals' Facebook page very helpfully directs visitors to free content in individual journals. That's how I learned that this article is freely available until 13 Feb. 2014:
  • "Rethinking refugeehood: statelessness, repatriation, and refugee agency," Review of International Studies, vol 40, no. 1 (Jan. 2014) [full-text]
