Tip: News Sources

(updated Jan. 2024)

How does one keep up with the news? While I do include media references in many of my posts, I never intended for this blog to be a resource for all the latest news since there are so many other great reporting services available. I have listed a handful below, all of which provide global coverage.

News services:

All the major media outlets report on humanitarian and migration developments. However, some news agencies focus more exclusively on these issues, including:
InterPress Service News Agency: Serves as a "communication channel that privileges the voices and the concerns of the poorest and creates a climate of understanding, accountability and participation around development, promoting a new international information order between the South and the North."
- The New Humanitarian (formerly IRIN): "An independent, non-profit newsroom reporting from the heart of conflicts, disasters and other crises."

News disseminators (listed by frequency):

- Twitter (now X): The perfect vehicle for very frequent news sharing! Follow Jeff Crisp for a steady stream of links to key news stories.
- InfoMigrants: Daily news stories from France Médias Monde, Deutsche Welle & ANSA.
- Center for Migration Studies: Sign up for their weekly Migration Update to learn about developments in the US and around the world.
- Kaldor Centre: Sign up for their Weekly News Roundup, with detailed reporting on developments in Australia as well as more general coverage of developments in other regions of the world.

Regional news disseminators:

- Africa: AllAfrica News - Refugees (daily)
- Americas: Migration Brief (weekly)
- MENA: Refugees and Migrants Media Roundup (intermittent)

News aggregators:

ecoi.net: Incorporates a variety of media reports into its country of origin information database; see which ones on their source list.
ReliefWeb: Includes Inter Press Service as one of its media sources; but also circulates IGO and NGO situation reports and flash updates on evolving humanitarian situations.

Avoiding fake news:

The reality today is that there are so many more false stories that make their way into the news stream. So for what it's worth, check out this infographic from the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) on "How to Spot Fake News." It's available in multiple languages!
