Research Tip #3: Finding New Events & Opportunities

As promised, here are a few resources for learning about upcoming conferences, job openings, courses, calls for papers and other types of events and opportunities (E&Os). I mentioned in an earlier post that I have never felt like I had a very systematic approach to monitoring this kind of information - it's always been a bit ad hoc. So much is also shared via social media, which in my view is more challenging to keep up with! That said, several users of this blog have left comments indicating that they find the monthly round-up of events and opportunities to be extremely useful. In the interest of supporting this kind of information request, it would be great if more event organizers could post their announcements to a centralized location, for example, the Forced Migration List described below, and in the process, create a more comprehensive resource for locating E&Os.

If anyone has other suggestions to share, please leave a comment.

Databases/directories:

Forced Migration List [access]
- "[P]rovides regular updates on major news, publications and events relating to forced migration. Posts will often include information about relevant funding opportunities, job vacancies and new research projects." Subscribe to get messages via email or RSS.

H-Announce (H-Net: Humanities & Social Sciences Online) [access]
- "[A] moderated one-way distribution network for events, conferences, calls for papers, calls for publication, programs, workshops, sources of short-term funding, fellowships, and news from H-Net and our affiliates." Select the "browse/search" tab and enter keywords, then filter by announcement type, date, country, etc.

ReliefWeb [access]
- Has separate directories for "Jobs" and "Training." Both offer multiple filters for narrowing down what you are interested in, including by closing date and registration deadline. Search results can be saved as an RSS feed so that you can be updated whenever a new entry to the directory meets your search parameters.

Newsletters:

ECRE Weekly Bulletin [access]
- Each issue includes event and vacancy announcements and CFPs. Most have a Europe focus.

ISI Monthly Bulletin [access]
- Includes event listings that focus on statelessness and nationality issues. You can sign up to receive new issues via email.

Rights in Exile Newsletter [access]
- A monthly round-up of news and information for legal aid provides, which regularly includes an "Announcements" section.
