News from Canada: New Books, Events & Opportunities, and More!

A newly published book entitled Mobilizing Knowledge, Refugee Research in an Age of Displacement reflects on the impact of the Refugee Research Network. A free PDF of the book is available on the publisher's site. Two book launch events are scheduled: The first is hosted by the IDRC and Carleton University's LERRN Project on 10 October 2019 in Ottawa and the second is hosted by the Centre for Refugee Studies on 11 November 2019 in Toronto.

Other new developments at Carleton University:

- As part of its research series, the Faculty of Public Affairs has organized the "Informing Migration Policy: International Experience and Evidence Conference," taking place in Ottawa on 3-4 October 2019.

- The first phase of the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN) project was launched in September. "The goal of the initiative is to work with partners in major refugee-hosting regions of the global South, which hosts 80% of the world’s refugees, to develop a plan to support sustainable, localized research capacity to better influence discussions on refugee issues in local, national, regional and global contexts." - An archival project is under way to preserve the memories and experiences of South East Asian refugees who settled in Canada 40 years ago.

And at the Centre for Refugee Studies (CRS):

- Prof. Sean Rehaag has been  appointed director for 2019-2022.

- Upcoming events in October include the Annual CRS Student Conference which will focus on durable solutions and seminars that focus on immigration detention and sanctuary.

- The latest issue of CRS' open access journal, Refuge, focuses on "Private Sponsorship in Canada."

- CRS is seeking a part-time coordinator for its summer course. The application deadline is 18 October 2019.
