Books & book chapters:

The EU and Crisis Response
(Manchester Univ. Press, Nov. 2021) [open access]
- "This is a start-of-the-art consideration of the European Union’s crisis response mechanisms. It brings together scholars from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to examine how and why the EU responds to crises on its borders and further afield. The work is based on extensive fieldwork in among another places, Afghanistan, Libya, Mali and Iraq." Chapter 8 focuses particularly on the "migration" crisis.

"Fences and fictions: lessons from schemes of responsibility-sharing for refugees in Europe," Chapter in The Protection of General Interests in Contemporary International Law: A Theoretical and Empirical Inquiry (Oxford Univ. Press, Oct. 2021) [preprint]

Stuck and Exploited: Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Italy Between Exclusion, Discrimination and Struggles (Edizioni Ca'Foscari, 2021) [open access]
- "This volume analyses exclusion processes, segregation dynamics and the forms of discrimination of refugees and asylum seekers in Italy, where the reception system is marked by opaqueness and arbitrariness and is becoming increasingly similar to the model of 'camps'. The numerous vibrant contributions present a fully-fledged system of inferiorization, characterised by labour exploitation, housing discomfort, meagre rights and control strategies, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a sharp worsening of the health, work, housing and administrative conditions. A framework that has found opposition in the daily resistance and in the struggles of asylum seekers."

VULNER Project: Vulnerabilities Under the Global Protection Regime [access]
- "The concept of 'vulnerability' is increasingly used as a tool that allows decision-makers to identify migrants in need of special assistance and protection... . Yet, there is no solid understanding of the concrete meanings, practical consequences, and legal implications of 'vulnerability'. ...In response to this research gap, the VULNER project aims to produce scientific data and analysis to support evidence-based policy-making... ." The European countries included in the analysis are Belgium, Germany, Italy & Norway. Check out the project's research reports and policy briefs for more info.
