Protection from Refoulement

Italy has been in the spotlight lately after it forcibly returned several hundred migrants to Libya, violating their right to seek asylum as allowed under international law. ECRE issued a statement yesterday condemning the action and citing a letter written by Pro Asyl to the European Commission. Similar statements were issued earlier by Human Rights Watch, JRS Europe, and UNHCR.

In light of these developments, a new book entitled International Legal Standards for the Protection from Refoulement should be of interest to legal scholars, policy makers, and refugee advocates. Read the abstract from the publisher and browse the detailed table of contents for more information. The author also spoke at a seminar held to discuss the role of the refoulement prohibition in today's world. The dissertation on which the book was based will eventually be deposited in Leiden University's Open Access Repository.
