World Humanitarian Day

Today is World Humanitarian Day.  2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad that claimed 22 lives, including Sérgio Vieiro de Mello and Arthur Helton, and injured many others. August 19th remembers those humanitarian aid workers who have died and honors the people that dedicate their lives to helping others.

To raise both public awareness about and funds to support humanitarian assistance activities around the world, the UN has launched a month-long campaign inviting contributions to the global humanitarian fund via a "marketplace for words."  Share or sponsor one of the words that complete the sentence "#theworldneedsmore... " (scroll down to view the words).  Follow the Twitter feed for some examples.

Thematic Focus: Statelessness

Accession update:

Nicaragua is the latest State party to both statelessness conventions, bringing the totals to 78 for the 1954 Convention and 53 for the 1961 Convention.  For an overview on the progress made re. accessions to the statelessness conventions, read this ENS blog post.  An upcoming UN Treaty Event will present another opportunity to encourage States to accede.
