Forced Migration and Humanitarian Action: Operational Challenges and Solutions for Supporting People on the Move
(Routledge, Oct. 2024) [open access]
- "This book investigates how the evolving situation of different forced migrants is accounted for and addressed in humanitarian action in order to improve their access to support and assistance. Bringing together case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific, this book focuses on a diversity of operational modalities and types of assistance provided by both traditional and non-traditional humanitarian actors to address the specific needs of displaced children, women, people with disabilities and older people, as well as trafficked migrant workers. This book adopts a broad perspective on humanitarian action, acknowledging how its boundaries are challenged and expanded in forced migration contexts. Its operational and theoretical insights will be useful for a range of readers, from humanitarian and migration researchers and students to practitioners and policymakers."

New open access books:

Global Asylum Governance and the European Union's Role: Rights and Responsibility in the Implementation of the United Nations Global Compact on Refugees (Springer, Dec. 2024) [open access]
- "This book analyses the characteristics and impacts of existing and emerging asylum governance instruments and their practical implementation in selected countries hosting large communities of refugees around the world. Particular focus is given to the cases of Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Jordan, Niger, Serbia, South Africa and Turkey. Attention is put into regional and country-specific asylum instruments and actors from the perspective of their effectiveness, fairness and consistency with refugee protection and human rights standards as well as the UN GCR commitments. By doing so, the book identifies key lessons learned and offers a critical view on policies framed as 'promising practices' so as to inform future steps in the UN GCR implementation and asylum governance more generally. As such, the book provides a better understanding of the concept of 'mobility' in asylum governance, and the ways in which it is articulated into legal and policy instruments framed as 'protection' and - in the language of the UN GCR - 'third country solutions' for refugee mobility, including resettlement, private/community sponsorships, humanitarian corridors, in the European Union and around the world."

Refugee Politics in Early Modern Europe (Bloomsbury Academic, Sept. 2024) [open access]
- "Refugees have existed since ancient times but it was in the early modern era that they first became a distinct social and political category. This open access book maps the early modern ‘invention of the refugee’ and in the process uncovers their impact on local, regional, and transnational politics. With case studies ranging from Scandinavia to the Maghreb, Refugee Politics in Early Modern Europe traces how refugees transformed Europe. Topics explored include: the development of refugees as a political group in early modern societies; the role of displaced minorities in forging humanitarian networks; and the impact of refugees on migration management and imperialism. Most notably, this collection of essays moves beyond discussions of expulsion and flight to shine a spotlight on how states responded critically and constitutionally to refugees – as a means of galvanizing social groups, reinforcing identities, promoting activities, and expanding bureaucratic reach."
