New Resource: Rethinking Refuge

The Refugee Studies Centre (RSC) has launched a new platform called "Rethinking Refuge" that provides access to "short, research-based articles aimed at rethinking refugee issues from a variety of angles, such as politics, international relations, ethics, law, history, and anthropology."

The impetus for this resource came out of "the massive influx of refugees into Europe in 2015-2016. The Refugee Studies Centre received a heightened number of requests to share research about the international refugee regime and it became clear that both interest in and questions about refugee policies and reforms abounded."

"The platform seeks to bridge the gap between scholarly research, policy-making, and public understanding, and in so doing develop a research agenda able to engage meaningfully with the challenge of forced displacement in the 21st century. The articles fall under six core themes, each hugely relevant to the international refugee regime today: refugee protection, emergency and crisis, mobility, refugee agency, humanitarianism, and refugees’ economic lives."

News: World Refugee Day

In advance of World Refugee Day, UNHCR released its annual Global Trends report yesterday, finding that "70.8 million children, women and men were forcibly displaced at the close of 2018, the highest number in the organization’s almost 70-year history." The press release for the 2018 report broke this overall figure down as follows:

"Within the 70.8 million figure in the Global Trends report are three main groups. The first is refugees, meaning people forced to flee their country because of conflict, war or persecution. In 2018, the number of refugees reached 25.9 million worldwide, 500,000 more than in 2017. Included in this total are 5.5 million Palestine refugees who are under the care of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
The second group is asylum seekers – people outside their country of origin and receiving international protection, but awaiting the outcome of their claim to refugee status. At the end of 2018 there were 3.5 million asylum seekers globally.
The third and biggest group, at 41.3 million, is people displaced to other areas within their own country, a category commonly referred to as Internally Displaced People or IDPs."

Previous editions of Global Trends reports can be accessed here.
