New Issue of FMR

The November 2021 issue of Forced Migration Review (FMR) has been published. FMR68 "includes a major feature on Externalisation. With States increasingly taking action beyond their own borders to prevent the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers, we examine the consequences for protection. A second feature focuses on Mobility and agency for those living in protracted displacement, produced in collaboration with the TRAFIG research project." The Editors' Briefing provides a more detailed overview of what is covered.

Readers can access FMR articles 1) individually, in HTML & PDF formats or 2) as one complete issue. There is also a standalone version available for the second feature on mobility and agency.

Back issues of FMR are available here.

FMR is an open access publication. It is available online and in print in English, Arabic, French and Spanish. Audio versions of articles are available in English.

News: UNHCR's Forthcoming "Flagship" Publication

UNHCR will be offering a new book in early 2022 titled People Forced to Flee: History, Change and Challenge. The print version will be published by Oxford University Press (16 Feb. 2022 in the UK, 21 April 2022 in the US), while a digital version will be made available on UNHCR's website.

This is apparently the successor to UNHCR's earlier series, The State of the World’s Refugees, which included six editions published between 1993 and 2012 (the complete texts for the first five can be accessed here). As such, the forthcoming volume originally carried a working title of The State of the World's Forcibly Displaced (SOWFD), according to this FM List posting and confirmed by the Google cache for OUP's description of the book.

While a table of contents is not yet available, more information about the scope of the book can be gleaned from the companion page provided by UNHCR. Visitors will find 29 background papers "which canvass a number of wide-ranging contemporary issues such as drivers of displacement; socioeconomic inclusion for forcibly displaced persons; improving data and evidence; unlocking more solutions; and engaging more broadly. They represent the perspectives of a broad array of partners in forced displacement responses and have helped inform the research for People Forced to Flee: History, Change and Challenge."

The Refugee Response Index (DARA) [access]
- "The Refugee Response Index is a civil society led initiative designed to assess and monitor countries’ response to refugees and asylum seekers in an independent and comprehensive manner. It covers each component of an adequate refugee response and can be used in any country context, regardless of size and contribution to the global refugee response. With support from the European Commission (DG-INTPA), the Refugee Response Index was successfully pilot tested in Kenya and Costa Rica, and the findings from this process informed the refinement of the indicators and methodology. The detailed Guidebook and Questionnaire comprises 6 pillars and over 160 indicators ranging from access to asylum through to making the international refugee system work." See also the companion website.

Their Story is Our Story [access]
- "We share stories of the refugee journey to advocate and educate, and to actuate integration." Brigham Young University also recently established a Global Refugee Archive to collect these and other stories.

Considering these intersectional vulnerabilities throughout, this book explores the experiences of adolescents from refugee, internally displaced persons and stateless communities in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Rwanda. Drawing on innovative mixed-methods research, the book investigates adolescent capabilities, including education, health and nutrition, freedom from violence and bodily integrity, psychosocial wellbeing, voice and agency, and economic empowerment."
