News: 70th Anniversary of the Refugee Convention

The 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees turned 70 today! Read the High Commissioner's call for "states to renew their commitment to its life-saving principles." For an introduction to this key international treaty, read my guide to international refugee law resources. To learn more about the ongoing debate surrounding the convention's continuing relevance in the world today, check out this blog symposium organized by Völkerrechtsblog and FluchtforschungsBlog.

*See also "Global Amnesia: The Refugee Convention after 70 Years," the winning essay of a UNHCR-sponsored competition. Contributors were asked to consider the following: "July 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of the Refugee Convention. How has it helped save lives over the decades and what might be the impact if it was abandoned?"

Many other references to the refugee convention can be found on my blog by following the subject term "CSR51" and browsing through postings.
