World Humanitarian Day

Today is World Humanitarian Day.  2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad that claimed 22 lives, including Sérgio Vieiro de Mello and Arthur Helton, and injured many others. August 19th remembers those humanitarian aid workers who have died and honors the people that dedicate their lives to helping others.

To raise both public awareness about and funds to support humanitarian assistance activities around the world, the UN has launched a month-long campaign inviting contributions to the global humanitarian fund via a "marketplace for words."  Share or sponsor one of the words that complete the sentence "#theworldneedsmore... " (scroll down to view the words).  Follow the Twitter feed for some examples.
