Disability and Displacement

Forced Migration Review's latest issue focuses on "Disability and Displacement." Included are 27 articles that "show why disabled people who are displaced need particular consideration and highlight some of the initiatives taken (locally and at the global level) to change thinking and practices so that their vulnerability is recognised, their voices heard – and responses made inclusive."

In addition, the issue showcases a mini-feature on Brazil and five general articles. Readers can either access the complete PDF text of FMR 35 or browse individual articles from the contents list. Microsoft Word versions and audio files are also available for the first time.

Forced Migration Online (FMO) has compiled a related resource summary to complement the focus of this FMR issue.

And on a separate but related note, one contributor to this issue, the Women's Refugee Commission, will be hosting a workshop in Haiti on "Facilitating Access and Promoting Inclusion for People with Disabilities." See the invitation in English and French for more details. The training will be based on this resource kit. The Commission's fact sheet provides additional information on refugees and conflict-affected persons with disabilities.

Combating and preventing trafficking in human beings

The European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) will be hosting a programme tomorrow on "Combating and preventing trafficking in human beings: the way forward." You can tune in for a live broadcast at 14:55 Brussels time.

The aim of this event is "to explore ways forward, together with the relevant institutional and civil society stakeholders, at EU and international level, in order to give the rapporteurs and shadow rapporteurs the widest awareness of the phenomenon in view of negotiating the proposed Directive." (i.e., the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings, and protecting victims, repealing Framework Decision 2002/629/JHA).

UNHCR recently issued its own Comments on the proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings, and protecting victims (COM(2010)95, 29 March 2010).

A few new blogs...

The Women's Refugee Commission has been active on the social media front, but did not have a blog until recently - May 17th to be exact! Their aim is to "talk more in depth about our various programs and the findings we uncover through our work and research." One post was provided by a guest blogger, Deo Niyizonkiza, a refugee from Burundi whose story was recently told in Tracy Kidder's Strength in What Remains.

The HJT Training Immigration Blog started up in March, in order "to keep readers up to date with the latest legal developments in [UK] immigration and asylum law." Their side bar includes listings of immigration cases and news from the UK Border Agency.

You don't often see blogs set up for conferences in the forced migration community. However, one has been launched in advance of "Double Jeopardy: An international conference on the issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex asylum seekers and refugees," scheduled for 6-7 July 2010. In the interim, you can follow headlines in the sidebar for postings to the LGBT Asylum News and Persian Gay and Lesbian Liberators (PGLL) blogs.
