The Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy magazine have released their second index of failed states. "Using 12 social, economic, political, and military indicators, [they] ranked 148 states in order of their vulnerability to violent internal conflict and societal dysfunction." Included among the indicators are "massive movement of refugees and IDPs," "chronic and sustained human flight," and "widespread violation of human rights." The Foreign Policy articles provide an overview of the failed state phenomenon and consider some of the whys and wherefores, while the Fund for Peace pages offer additional data and analysis. Read the related article from the BBC.
Another resource for datasets and reports on failed states is the State Failure Task Force.
