UNHCR Archives Projects

The Programme for the Study of Global Migration at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies has been working on several projects in conjunction with the UNHCR Archives to not only facilitate access to the records of the refugee agency but also to better understand the historical context for UNHCR's actions and decisions. The projects include:

  • Records of the Office of the High Commissioner [info]
  • UNHCR and the Global Cold War, 1971-1984 [info]
  • UNHCR and the Globalization of Refugee Issues, 1951-1989 [info]
  • UNHCR Archival Project [info]
One of the planned outcomes from these projects is "the publication of a major book on the history of UNHCR from 1951 to 1989" to mark the 60th anniversary of the organization. Also in the works are a number of articles and working papers, the first of which is now available:

"Sadruddin Aga Khan and the 1971 East Pakistani Crisis: Refugees and Mediation in Light of the Records of the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees," Global Migration Research Papers, no. 1 (The Graduate Institute, Dec. 2010) [text] [summary]

For more information on the paper, read the "History of the UNHCR."
