2019 Africa Report on Internal Displacement (Dec. 2019) [access]
- "There were 16.8 million people living in internal displacement as a result of conflict and violence in Africa as of the end of 2018. This is the highest figure ever recorded for the continent, and around 40 per cent of the global total. Disasters, particularly those associated with hydrometeorological hazards such as floods, storms and drought, also triggered 2.6 million new displacements during the year. Conflict and disaster events in 2019 suggest that the number of displacements is likely to continue rising, which shows that the phenomenon is not being reduced." Bridging a Data Gap: Estimating the Cost of Internal Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa with Modelled Projections (Dec. 2019) [text]
- "This paper proposes two methodological approaches to compiling estimates in countries for which there is no secondary data. These methods and the results they yield help to bridge a major knowledge gap on the consequences of internal displacement for economies." Unveiling the Cost of Internal Displacement in Africa (Dec. 2019) [text]
- "These new estimates place the total economic impact of internal displacement in sub-Saharan Africa at $4 billion in 2018, a significant burden for already struggling economies. The figures presented in this report uncover just part of the hidden cost of internal displacement, but they amount to a noticeable share of each country’s GDP. Highlighting these financial consequences for IDPs, hosts and governments can inform better planning for prevention and response to internal displacement." See also related press release.
