In advance of World Refugee Day, UNHCR released its annual Global Trends report today. Here are its main findings:
- At the end of 2019, a total of 79.5 million people around the world had been forcibly displaced, up from 70.8 million the year before
- Of this total figure, 20.4 million are refugees under UNHCR’s mandate, while 5.6 million Palestinians are refugees under UNRWA’s mandate
- 45.7 million are internally displaced people
- 4.2 million are asylum-seekers
- 3.6 million are Venezuelans who may "not [be] legally registered as refugees or asylum-seekers, but for whom protection-sensitive arrangements are required"
