Quest for Refuge: Reception Responses from the Global North (Edições Humus, 2020) [full-text via ResearchGate]
- "How have countries in the Global North responded to the quest for refuge? This collection of chapters articulates diverse scales of analysis across international geographies (Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, USA) drawn from different disciplinary perspectives (anthropology, geography, social work, sociology) in order to bring to light the complexities of refugee settlement and integration. The authors address time-old questions in refugee studies, the urgency of which has not diminished: how is the distinction between migrant and refugee enshrined in law and played out in practice? In what ways can local communities become involved in welcoming refugees? How to avoid a slippery slope towards humanitarian charity-based approaches instead of rights-based approaches towards international protection? What kind of balance needs to be found between state, private and third sector provision of services for refugees? How can refugee reception systems be improved to meet their needs?"

Revisiting the 1951 Refugee Convention: Exploring Global Perspectives
(Observer Research Foundation & Global Policy Journal, 2022) [full-text]
- "This volume revisits the relevance of the 1951 Convention in today’s world. To mark the significance of this important document, the essays in this compendium analyse various dimensions of the universal refugee protection regime. The volume is divided into three segments—Understanding the Relevance of the 1951 Convention; Refugee Protections and Local Geographies; and the Rohingya: Precarities of a Stateless People—to include perspectives from diverse geographies (South Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Australia) and various aspects of the global refugee protection framework."

Routledge Handbook on Extraterritorial Human Rights Obligations (Routledge, Dec. 2021) [open access]
- This handbook "brings international scholarship on transnational human rights obligations into a comprehensive and wide-ranging volume. Each chapter combines a thorough analysis of a particular issue area and provides a forward-looking perspective of how extraterritorial human rights obligations (ETOs) might come to be more fully recognized, outlining shortcomings but also best state practices. It builds insights gained from state practice to identify gaps in the literature and points to future avenues of inquiry." Relevant sections include "Nowhere countries: When states use extra-territoriality at home to circumvent legal, human and refugee rights" (chapter 5) and Part III, which focuses on "Migration and Refugee Protection."

Round-up: OA Articles Published by Asia-based Authors

Here is a round-up of recent (as of 2020) open access journal articles by authors affiliated with institutions based in certain Asian countries that are not included in my Global South round-ups, but that are similarly less well-represented in my coverage of the OA forced migration research corpus. The countries/regions include Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Journal issues/collections:

Journal of Human Security Studies, vol. 10, no. 2 (2021) [open access]
- Special issue on "Refugees/Migrants and Work and Education." Its aims are: "(1) to address core issues of refugees and migrants in light of ‘the Global Refugee Crisis’ and the Global Compacts and Global Forums on Refugees and Migrants, with a particular focus on education and employment in line with the discussion in the 2019 JAHSS-JASID Conference on the same; and (2) to provide updates and
critically review Japan’s policy and practice for refugee and migrant protection, in particular concerning alternative pathways including the third country resettlement of refugees and new labor migration system, in order to ensure human security of refugees and migrants." Most authors are affiliated with Japanese institutions.

The Routledge Handbook of Smuggling
(Routledge, Dec. 2021) [open access]
- "[A] comprehensive survey of interdisciplinary research related to smuggling, reflecting on key themes, and charting current and future trends. Divided into six parts and spanning over 30 chapters, the volume covers themes such as mobility, borders, violent conflict, and state politics, as well as looks at the smuggling of specific goods... . Chapters engage with some of the most contentious academic and policy debates of the twenty-first century, including the historical creation of borders, re-bordering, the criminalisation of migration, and the politics of selective toleration of smuggling. As it maps a field that contains unique methodological, ethical, and risk-related challenges, the book takes stock not only of the state of our shared knowledge, but also reflects on how this has been produced, pointing to blind spots and providing an informed vision of the future of the field."
