News: 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement

The 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID) has been published. It estimates a record high total of over 71 million people displaced within their own countries at the end of 2022, 62.5 million as a result of conflict and violence and 8.7 million as a result of disasters. From IDMC's press release:

"Internal displacement is a global phenomenon, but nearly three-quarters of the world’s IDPs live in just 10 countries - Syria, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ukraine, Colombia, Ethiopia, Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia and Sudan - many as a result of unresolved conflicts that continued to trigger significant displacement in 2022.

  Conflict and violence triggered 28.3 million internal displacements worldwide, a figure three times higher than the annual average over the past decade. Beyond Ukraine, nine million or 32 per cent of the global total were recorded in sub-Saharan Africa. DRC accounted for around four million and Ethiopia just over two million.  

  The number of disaster displacements rose by nearly 40 per cent compared to the previous year, reaching 32.6 million, largely the result of the effects of La Niña which continued for a third consecutive year. South Asia recorded the highest regional figure, surpassing East Asia and the Pacific for the first time in a decade. In the Horn of Africa, the worst drought in 40 years triggered 2.1 million movements, including 1.1 million in Somalia alone, while fuelling acute food insecurity across the region."

- "This edited volume explores whether and to what extent the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean especially have sought to integrate refugees of the Syrian conflict into their national societies. To this end, each chapter examines the rhetoric of various political actors operating in those countries as well as the practices of their governments. Specific chapters ask how those forces securitized and de-securitized Syrian refugee flows and how effective national governments have been in addressing the national security concerns their exodus and influx have created. A share of our authors analyze the roles that international actors, such as the EU, the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), have played in assisting the process of Syrian refugee integration into the societies of the Eastern Mediterranean countries."

News: UNHCR Position on Returns to Sudan

UNHCR has published a position paper setting out its views on returns to Sudan. It concludes "UNHCR calls on States to suspend the forcible return of nationals and stateless persons who were habitual residents of Sudan, including those who have already had their asylum claims rejected. The bar on forcible return

serves as a minimum standard and needs to remain in place until such time as the security situation in

Sudan has significantly improved to permit a safe and dignified return of those determined not to be in

need of international protection."
