The 71st session of UNHCR's Executive Committee took place last week, from 5-9 October 2020. Video of the keynotes and the general debate have been posted on the session's web page. Also available are:

- the opening and closing statements of the High Commissioner (see also related UNHCR news story);

- written statements presented by delegations during the general debate (note that not all may be available yet);

- the statement of the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection (see also related UNHCR news story);

- delegation statements during the consideration of reports relating to international protection;

- An oral review of the annual UNHCR/NGO consultation was also provided (the original July meeting was deferred to September);

- NGO statements are available on ICVA's web site.

Once again, the Trump administration plans to reduce the total number of refugees that will be admitted to the US in FY21 to yet another new low, or 15,000. Moreover, despite the release of a State Dept. statement on the administration's intentions, this ABC News article points out that "President Donald Trump has not yet signed a new executive order on admissions and officially set a new cap, so all refugees that were already approved for processing will now be left in limbo overseas." News: 71st Session of EXCOM

The 71st session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme (EXCOM) will be held 5-9 October 2020. A hybrid format will be followed, with a limited in-person event in Geneva and remote participation otherwise. More information about the arrangements is available on the EXCOM 2020 web page.

You will also find a provisional agenda, a limited set of documents (including the Note on International Protection and regional updates), and information about various side events via the a/m link. A webcast of the proceedings will be available as well as of Monday morning.

In addition, the Nansen Refugee Award ceremony will take place the evening of 5 October. The recipient was announced yesterday: The award will go to Mayerlín Vergara Pérez, a child rights defender with  Fundación Renacer in Colombia. Regional winners were announced last month.
