News: High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement

The UN Secretary-General announced the establishment of the first High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement in October 2019. The panel's remit is "to focus on finding solutions to internal displacement situations and alleviating the impact on millions of affected people. The High-Level Panel will work to increase global attention on and support for displaced persons, while developing concrete recommendations for Member States, the United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders to improve the approach and response to the issue, with a particular focus on durable solutions."

A secretariat for and members of the panel have now been appointed. More information is available in this UN news release and VOA News article.

New MOOC:

The Refugee Law Initiative has launched a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled "Refugees in the 21st Century." Here is the description:

"This MOOC provides insight into the refugee phenomenon as one of the most complex, compelling and (arguably) misunderstood features of the 21st century. Taking a global perspective, it will outline the fundamentals of who ‘refugees’ are, where they come from and where they go, as well as delving into the features of the global system for refugee protection and ‘solutions’ for those who have been forcibly displaced. It places the student at the centre of the learning experience through engagement with a range of robust and challenging activities, materials and online peer engagement."

Students who enroll in the 6-week course can work through the materials at their own pace.

News: New Edition of HRW's World Report

The latest edition of Human Rights Watch's annual human rights survey, World Report 2020: Events of 2019 was launched yesterday at the United Nations. As the foreword notes, this is HRW's "30th annual review of human rights practices around the globe. It summarizes key human rights issues in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide, drawing on events from late 2018 through November 2019." References to the situation of refugees and displaced people are incorporated into relevant country chapters.

Readers can download the entire report or browse by individual country on the report's web site. Abridged versions are offered in eight other languages. Previous editions of the World Report can be found here.
