News: Latest Global Trends Report Published

UNHCR launched its annual Global Trends report today, in advance of World Refugee Day. Its main findings: 

"At the end of 2023, an estimated 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing the public order. Based on operational data, UNHCR estimates that forced displacement has continued to increase in the first four months of 2024 and by the end of April 2024 is likely to have exceeded 120 million."

Here is a breakdown by group for year-end 2023:

- Refugees = 43.4 million (37.4 million under UNHCR's mandate & 6 million Palestinian refugees under UNRWA’s mandate)

- Internally displaced people = 68.3 million (due to conflict/violence)

- Asylum-seekers = 6.9 million 

- Note: The discrepancy between the total of this breakdown and the estimated worldwide total indicated above is due to the inclusion of displaced Palestinians in Gaza in two categories, i.e., "UNRWA's mandate" and "IDPs".
