(updated)The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) released its "annual summary of the numbers of people internally displaced by sudden onset natural disasters" yesterday. Global Estimates 2011: People Displaced by Natural Hazard-Induced Disasters found that "in 2011, 14.9 million people were internally displaced throughout the world due to natural disasters, mostly related to weather events such as floods and storms." Most displacement took place in Asia.
IDMC made the report available in advance of Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, which will be held 20-22 June 2012.
IRIN has also prepared a booklet for Rio+20 participants entitled "Living with Climate Change."
