Asylum Recognition Rates

In the U.S.: Some recent data on "Asylum Decisions by Immigration Court Judges" from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) prompted this analysis by the New York Times.

Other analyses of the data focused on the high denial rates of Mexican asylum seekers (see here and here), pointing particularly to U.S.-Mexico relations as a factor that influences judges' decisions.

In Europe: ECRE has produced four maps displaying wide variations in positive decisions on asylum applications in Europe; the data are based on figures from UNHCR's latest Global Trends report. (Other data from Eurostat are available here.)

IntLawGrrls posted some thoughts on these disparities, while the Migration Studies Unit at LSE published a paper that investigates possible linkages between asylum recognition rates and countries' respect for human rights (see "Prospects for the Governance of Refugee Protection: Exploring the Effect of an Unbalanced Level of Asylum Recognition Rates amongst European Countries").

Finally, this recently published article - "‘The Good Old Days of the Cold War’: Arguments Used to Admit or Reject Asylum Seekers in the Netherlands, 1957–1967" - takes an historical look at the asylum decision-making process.

Managing the Information You Find Online

I often wonder what readers do with all the information posted on this blog! Obviously, not all of it is relevant to you, but when it is, how do you manage it? Here are a few free web applications which may help on the receiving end of things, but I am also interested in your feedback, so please share your own strategies.

Bookmarking Services:

These services allow you to create bookmarks (i.e., save the address) for any web-based resource, store them in one central place, and access them online. You can organize your bookmarks using tags (or keywords), and you can share your bookmarks in various ways. So if you are working on several research projects, you could use standardized tags to describe the online materials you find that relate in some way to those projects. I can vouch for both Delicious and Diigo (here are examples of how I've used each service: SRLAN Current Awareness Bibliography and New Journal Articles). There are many other bookmarking services besides these; two that I've heard good things about but haven't used are Evernote (requires a free download) and Pinboard (charges a small fee).

Online Reference Managers:

These are similar to bookmarking services, but they are more geared to a research audience. As such, emphasis is placed on bookmarking references to journal articles and scholarly papers, but other resources can be bookmarked as well. Two well-known services in this category are CiteULike and Connotea; both offer the ability to assign tags, share references and connect with colleagues. Connotea is a bit more user-friendly and is ad-free, but in the past has been quite slow.

Bibliography Managers:

These applications are more traditional bibliography-builders and are designed to make it easier to format any of your online references according to certain citation styles (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.). In the past, I have used EndNote, which is a desktop application, but I am interested in exploring these web-based programmes to see how they compare: BibMe.org, EasyBib.com, Zotero (note: the classic version of this application is used in conjunction with Firefox; however, a beta version is now available for download that will run on your desktop).

- Beta tool from InterAction that allows you to create maps to show who is doing what, where. Three maps are currently available for Haiti, the Horn of Africa crisis, and food security.

Options for searching this blog

Here are a few different methods to use to search this blog:

1. Browse by subject label: These are now displayed in the navigation bar on the right. I index every post with subject terms from the International Thesaurus of Refugee Terminology (ITRT) (which hasn't been updated in a while, but that's a topic for a different post!). If there is one term in particular that captures a particular issue of interest, then a good way to look for relevant references is to browse by that subject term. See, for example, "development induced displacement," "gender-based persecution" or "country of origin conditions." This is certainly not a fail-safe method for identifying all relevant posts; Blogger sets a limit on the number of labels that can be assigned for each post, so I am not able to apply all potentially relevant terms. But the most significant ones are.

2. Site search: The ability to add labels only became available in 2007, so posts from Nov. 2005 through Jan. 2007 do not include them (I began using labels in Feb. 2007). Moreover, not all subjects are covered by the Thesaurus; "protracted displacement" is just one example. To retrieve references to this issue, particularly those from pre-2007, you can conduct a search using the site search box in the navigation bar on the right. Once your results are displayed, you can choose to "sort them by date."

3. Google search: Another option is to use Google's general search engine; you can configure your search query as follows: keyword site:fm-cab.blogspot.com. Substitute "keyword" for your search term; for example: protracted site:fm-cab.blogspot.com. This option is useful because you can take advantage of Google's various search features.  

For your convenience, I will insert a link to this post next to the site search box (see "etc."). Then you can be reminded more quickly about the various alternative search options!

A new book will soon be published that considers The Future of Asylum in the European Union: Problems, Proposals and Human Rights (T.M.C. Asser Press, Sept. 2011). Here's part of the blurb:

Applicants for this consultancy should ideally have some knowledge of UNHCR, experience of refugee programmes in a variety of different locations, as well as proven expertise in the areas of mental health and organizational evaluation.

This evaluation will be based primarily on desk research and interviews in Geneva. Limited travel to the field may also be possible.
