News: GHA Report 2014 Published

The 2014 edition of the Global Humanitarian Assistance Report has been published.  Here is part of the description:

How much is spent on humanitarian assistance? Is it enough? Where does it go? How does it get there and what is it spent on? Knowing who is spending what, where, and how is an essential first step in ensuring that resources can best meet the needs of people living in crises – yet this information is often hard to access. To answer these questions, the Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) Report 2014 uses unique methodologies to gather and analyse data to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive picture of global humanitarian financing. We have produced this report annually since 2000, to provide a shared and independent evidence base for anyone engaged in providing, using and understanding assistance in crisis settings.

This infographic provides a quick overview of some of the key findings of the report.

News: Review & Update of World Bank Safeguard Policies

The World Bank is preparing to revise its Environmental and Social Framework, and a draft document is now available for consultation and feedback from the public.  The consultation period will run until 30 November 2014.

However, concerns have been expressed that the proposed revisions greatly dilute the World Bank's safeguard policies for indigenous groups, impoverished people, and those affected by development projects, among others. The International Network on Displacement and Resettlement (INDR) has put together an "Involuntary Resettlement and Land Acquisition Dilutions Matrix" to better assess the extent to which standards have been weakened.

Tip of the Week! Using RSS to Monitor Facebook

I confess, I am not on Facebook!  That said, there are plenty of public Facebook pages that I check for relevant information.  Visiting each one individually, however, would take too much time.  So my work-around is to create RSS feeds for the Facebook pages I want to monitor.


Here's how to do it:

1. Use this URL as your base:
http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=rss20&id=

2. Find the ID for the Facebook page of interest.  This is often displayed in the URL of a Facebook page; see, e.g., ECRE's URL.  The number at the end - 107028942227 - is the ID.

If it is not already displayed in the URL, you can find it by using this nifty tool.  Just enter a URL (for example, https://www.facebook.com/UNHCR) and the tool will look it up for you.

3. Once you have the ID, simply append it to the base URL noted in step 1, and you will have an RSS feed.
