50th Anniversary of the Statelessness Convention

The 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness turned 50 today. As reported earlier, UNHCR launched a campaign against statelessness in advance of the anniversary. One priority is to promote accessions to both the 1961 Convention and its predecessor, the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, which are low compared to other treaties. As of June 2011, the former had 38 states parties while the latter had 66. For reference, this updated world map graphically displays the signatories of both.
