World Refugee Day Series: Open Access Materials - Refugee Participation in Research/Knowledge Production

The theme for this year's World Refugee Day is "solidarity with refugees." This post focuses on solidarity within the research context, i.e., the extent to which displaced persons are able to participate in the research and knowledge production process. Here is a round-up of recent short pieces, journal articles, book chapters and reports that were referenced on my blog over the last two years:

World Refugee Day Series: Open Access Materials - Research Resources

Numerous resources and tools have been developed over the years to provide information and research support to the field of forced migration studies and to facilitate access to a wide variety of open access/freely available materials.

This list directs you to a small subset of them:

Research guides that I have compiled:

Event: World Refugee Day

Today is World Refugee Day! The 2024 theme is "solidarity with refugees":

"Refugees need our solidarity now more than ever. Solidarity means keeping our doors open, celebrating their strengths and achievements, and reflecting on the challenges they face. Solidarity with people forced to flee also means finding solutions to their plight – ending conflicts so they can return home in safety, ensuring they have opportunities to thrive in the communities that have welcomed them, and providing countries with the resources they need to include and support refugees."

See also the UN Secretary-General's video message, the High Commissioner's statement and an announcement from the Platform of Independent Experts on Refugee Rights (PIERR).

World Refugee Day Series: Open Access Materials - Postprints

A postprint is defined as "A digital draft of a research journal article after it has been peer reviewed and accepted for publication, but before it has been typeset and formatted by the journal." Other terms used are "author accepted manuscript" (AAM) or "accepted manuscript." Authors who self-archive or share free postprint versions of journal articles via repositories and websites are engaging in green open access. The benefits that authors gain from other types of open access are the same for the green route, that is, enhanced discoverability, increased usage and greater citation impact. The biggest difference is that green OA does not require authors to pay any fees to make their research freely available.

Postprints tend to be deposited in either institutional or subject repositories. As such, they will generally appear in the search results of standard search engines like Google Scholar. That said, green versions of scholarly content can still be challenging to locate. Here are a few resources that can help:

- Yesterday, I referenced the pages I maintain that list hybrid OA articles published in OUP's three refugee journals - those pages *also* record postprints that are available! See IJRL, JRS (2014-2021), JRS (2022+) and RSQ.
- I often discover postprints via the Unpaywall browser extension that I have installed on Chrome; it will display a green unlocked symbol when it has identified a free version of a paywalled article.
- Any postprints I reference on this blog are labeled as such; to view them, follow this link, then hit "ctrl-f" to open up the "find" function and look for instances of "postprint".

A primary remit of the Forced Migration Research Archive (FMRA) is to offer authors a space for  depositing their postprints. Here are two recent examples:
- "A Mile in Their Shoes: Understanding Healthcare Journeys of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the UK," International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, vol. 20, no. 2 (2024)
- "The Relationship between Human Rights and Refugee Protection: An Empirical Analysis," International Journal of Human Rights, vol. 25, no. 10 (2021)

World Refugee Day Series: Open Access Materials - Journal Articles

There are two types of open access journal articles:

1) Those that are published in journals in which all articles are free to read immediately (gold open access). Some journals require authors to pay a fee for publication, while others don't. The latter are referred to more specifically as "diamond" journals. Moreover, some OA journals allow all types of sharing and re-use, while others do not. See this list for a selection of forced migration-related OA journal titles.

2) Those that are published open access on the websites of traditional subscription-based journals after a publication fee has been paid (hybrid open access). See this list for forced migration-related journals that offer a hybrid OA option for publication and the amount they charge.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) indexes the contents of OA journals and provides information on journal policies and practices - see, e.g., the record for Refuge: Canada's Journal on Refugees.

Other resources that can be used to locate OA journals & articles include:
- African Journals Online (AJOL) [access] (hosts over 500 open access journals published in Africa)
- OpenEdition Journals [access] [hosts over 500, primarily French-language, open access journals)
- Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) [access] (hosts over 1300 open access journals published in the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, Spain & Uruguay)

Locating hybrid open access journal articles in a systematic way is a bit more challenging. However, here are a few resources that can help pinpoint OA articles within traditional journals:
- I maintain pages that list all open access articles published in OUP's three refugee journals; see IJRLJRS (2014-2021)JRS (2022+) and RSQ.
- You can also search directly on a journal publisher's website, either in an individual journal or all journals, and narrow results by "open access." See, e.g., this search for "refugees" in Taylor & Francis Online.
- Google Scholar's search results will indicate whether or not a full-text version of an article is available, including for hybrid journals:

The Forced Migration Research Archive (FMRA) accepts all types of OA journal articles. Here are two examples of recent additions:
- Gold OA article: "The Sociology of Refugee Migration," Annual Review of Sociology, vol. 44 (2018)
- Hybrid OA article: "A Review of Drivers of Environmental Non-migration Decisions in Africa," Regional Environmental Change, vol. 22, no. 4 (2022)

Make your research easier to find by depositing it in FMRA!

Thematic Focus: Children & Families

Short pieces:

Government’s Move to Terminate Flores Agreement Could Leave Immigrant Children Unprotected (Immigration Impact Blog, May 2024) [text]
- Focuses on the US.

New open access books:

‘Am I Less British?’: Racism, Belonging, and the Children of Refugees and Immigrants in North London
(UCL Press, Feb. 2024) [open access]
- This book "focuses on the children of refugees and immigrants in North London, whose parents migrated from Turkey. Providing a rich ethnography of the lives of the children, the book studies their sense of identity, belonging and their transnational experiences. It aims to understand how the children position themselves within a range of locations (London, North London and Turkey), where they face class hierarchy, racism and discrimination, and explores how they think about their sense of belonging within the contemporary political context in Britain and Turkey. De-identifying themselves from national identities and holding onto the oppressed identities appear as new forms of resistance in response to racism and exclusion."

Crisis for Whom? Critical Global Perspectives on Childhood, Care, and Migration / ¿Crisis según quién? Regímenes fronterizos globales, «minorización», (in)movibilidad y cuidado (UCL Press, Jan. 2023) [open access]
- "Children feature centrally in the ubiquitous narratives of ‘migration crises’. They are often depicted as essentially vulnerable and in need of special protections, or suspiciously adult-like and a threat to national borders. At the same time, many voices, experiences, and stories are rarely heard, especially about children on the move within the global South. This bilingual book, written in English and Spanish, challenges simplistic narratives to enrich perspectives and understanding. Drawing on collaborations between young (im)migrants, researchers, artists and activists, this collection asks new questions about how crises are produced, mobility is controlled, and childhood is conceptualised. Answers to these questions have profound implications for resources, infrastructures, and relationships of care."

World Refugee Day Series: Open Access Materials - Books

In the lead-up to World Refugee Day, I will be sharing a variety of open access resources with you. In turn, I hope this will help to encourage more authors to provide open access to their research - if you consult and cite open access materials in your scholarship, then you know the benefits they provide! In addition, I will be showcasing the Forced Migration Research Archive (FMRA) as an open access solution for authors who wish to share their research results more widely.

Today's post focuses on open access books. As many of you may already know, I not only reference open access book titles and chapters in the posts I circulate, both on this blog and on my Forced Migration Library blog, but I also maintain a resource page that lists new OA books by publication year. You can really see the increase over time of the number of books published as open access - and 2024 has gotten off to a good start!

I use the following platforms to discover new and relevant open access books in multiple languages:

Search results in Google Scholar will also indicate if a specific title is open access or not and if so, where the text is located.

Most imprints publish OA titles, and a wide variety of publishers are represented on the a/m resource page; Routledge and Springer, in particular, appear quite frequently. A separate resource page of mine lists forced migration-related book series, several of which feature open access titles more regularly than others. The OA Books Toolkit provides more information on the process of open access book publishing.

If you are already an author of an OA book, then your volume is very likely available via DOAB and OAPEN. However, to enhance the visibility of your research even further, you might also consider depositing your book in a subject-focused repository like the Forced Migration Research Archive (FMRA). Here is an example of a title that is already in the collection, Mobilizing Global Knowledge: Refugee Research in an Age of Displacement, edited by Susan McGrath and Julie E.E. Young.

If you would like to submit your open access book to FMRA, you just need to fill out a short form and then attach a PDF of your work - it's a very quick process! Thanks in advance for your contribution!

News: Latest Global Trends Report Published

UNHCR launched its annual Global Trends report today, in advance of World Refugee Day. Its main findings

"At the end of 2023, an estimated 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing the public order. Based on operational data, UNHCR estimates that forced displacement has continued to increase in the first four months of 2024 and by the end of April 2024 is likely to have exceeded 120 million."

Here is a breakdown by group for year-end 2023:
- Refugees = 43.4 million (37.4 million under UNHCR's mandate & 6 million Palestinian refugees under UNRWA’s mandate)
- Internally displaced people = 68.3 million (due to conflict/violence)
- Asylum-seekers = 6.9 million
- Note: The discrepancy between the total of this breakdown and the estimated worldwide total indicated above is due to the inclusion of displaced Palestinians in Gaza in two categories, i.e., "UNRWA's mandate" and "IDPs".

More details are provided in this UNHCR press release. The report is available in English, with summary information provided Arabic, French and Spanish.
