News: Revised U.S. Travel Ban

On 6 March 2017, the president finally signed a new Executive Order entitled "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States," that replaces the previous EO issued 27 Jan. 2017. In addition, he issued a companion Memorandum for the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security. The provisions of the EO do not go into effect until 16 March 2017.

The Dept. of Homeland Security has issued a related fact sheet and Q&A. See also this joint DOJ/DHS letter to the White House on the "weaknesses in our immigration system that pose a risk to our Nation's security."

The Just Security blog has provided a detailed line-by-line comparison between the original Executive Order and its replacement, and the Washington Post has provided a helpful summary of the changes.

*UNHCR's press release notes, "we are concerned that this decision, though temporary, may compound the anguish for those it affects."
